see these showers. i'm showing you the looping image over the past two hours moving really to the north and east. now, i want to stop and bring you into where we're seeing the heaviest downpours this morning. that's right over portions of grandville and vance county. check out henderson, middleburg right along 85. oxford seeing heavier downpours. these showers are moving very slow. so we are going to see water ponding on the roadways. i keep mentioning 85 because that's a big highway through those areas. on that on a daily basis so watch for standing water in the roadway if you are heading in that direction. elsewhere, temperatures in the low 70s in durham and in raleigh. 73 in clayton, goldsboro, and clinton. so planning for your monday ahead, some patchy fog, especially south of the triangle this morning. 75 at 8 a.m. pretty cloudy at noon. 82. we make it to 85 this afternoon. it will be warm and muggy. best chance for storms later

a closer look at the rest of your workweek forecast in just a little bit. right now, send it back to you guys. all right. we are following breaking news as we told you this morning. a system outage shut down delta flights all over the world. >> cbs north carolina's justin is tracking the latest updates from rdu. justin, it certainly looks like a lot of people are not going to make it to their destination on time this morning. >> absolutely. and this line out here is growing by the minute. let's take a this is actually the front of the line, but if you can see it actually wraps around the area here where people are checking in and goes all the way out to the doors. some of these people caught by surprise when they walked in this morning. some people told me that they were listening to all of my details this morning as i was giving a report earlier because they were not getting any information from delta. they showed up this morning and were unaware of the situation that they were walking into,

here. what we are hering from delta is this is all due to a problem with the computer system chl this is affecting all of the flights due to -- to head out this morning. this is, of course, around the nation. but also, we can tell you that flights that are already in route to their destinations are not affected by this. those continue to operate normally. but we will continue to bripg you live updates throughout the morning here on air and online at wncn.com and through our social media accounts. back to you guys. a flight schedule for us since the outage was about an hour ago. >> i checked the rdu web site. again, nothing showing delays just yet, and anything in route is going to arrive on time. over the next hour or so, we are going to see that line get a lot bigger at rdu. frms now, if you are driving, you are in luck today. you want to be a driver. you don't want top a flier. take a look. all green on our maps. no delays on 440 and 540.

but as alyssa mentioned, we have rain coming down this morning in parts of our area so give yourself extra time so you can get to work safely and on time. through durham, roads look pretty good. down through fayetteville, no sdevents to report to you there. a look at our airport travel conditions again. good conditions flying in to new york all the way to los angeles, however, if you are flying delta, be prepared to be delayed. a live look outside now at i-85 and durham freeway. very quiet start. quieter on the roads than it is thank you. well, the raleigh man accused of shooting and killing a man from his garage is expected to make his first court appearance later today. >> 39-year-old chad is charged with murder in the death of a 20-year-old man. emma wright joins us live from the wake county justice center. a complex investigation given the details police have gathered here. >> it is. and police say that this happened when the suspect in

ended up hitting the victim, who was standing outside in the street. this all happened just after 1:00 on sunday morning. police say after the victim was hit, he was taken to wake med where he was pronounced dead. cbs north carolina has obtained 911 calls that give us more insight about what led up to this shooting. the suspect called police shortly before the shooting happened. he told dispatcher that is a large group of people were causing a disturbance in front of his house. he said he was going to there and secure the neighborhood. he calls back a few minutes later and says the same group of people is now in front of his house with guns. he says he fired a warning shot, and someone got hit. >> can you tell me exactly what happened? >> yes. we -- we have -- our house is -- we have a lot of people outside our house yelling and shouting profanities. i yelled at them. they were showing firearms so i

we got somebody that -- that got hit. >> the suspect in this case is expected to make his first court appearance later today. reporting live in raleigh, i'm emma wright, cbs north carolina. >> emma, thank you. today, north carolina congressman g.k. butterfield will talk about hilary clinton's economic plan and the impact it would have on our state. the democrat will be talking about a recent report from moody's analytics. it's a group led by a registered democrat, who none theless, advised john mccain. the report claims while clinton's policies are far from perfect, they would resort in a stronger economy. according to new york times, a separate report found that trump's ideas would do the opposite, even going so far as to suggest it could plunge the country into recession by 2018. . right now, police are looking for the man who robbed a gas station at gunpoint. it happened yesterday morning on east chatham street. officers say the suspect showed a gun and then got away with cash.

there's still no word on the condition of a motorcyclist injured in a weekend crash. it happened yesterday afternoon in moore county. crews say the motorcycle had gone off the road and into the woods. they found the driver nearby and called for a helicopter, but the weather kept it at bay. we'll let you know once we get an update on the driver's condition. it's back to school for kids in cum berland county today. all head back today. if you are in those areas, expect extra traffic this in school. always got me so excited to put on the new uniform, new outfit and start a new year. >> love the smell of new notebooks. all right. currently 6:07 and a half in the morning. the lines are building at rdu to delta's worldwide outage. >> we will have another live report from the airport at 6:15. plus, the nfl's hall of fame game cancelled at the last minute. what the league discovered just hours before kickoff. temperatures, if you are getting redty to head for the

we certainly have seen a lot of traffic issues. as for weather, doesn't seem like we are having a lotf issues out there. >> not too many. a little bit of fog and rain. let's go ahead and take a live picture outside. look at those skies. cloud y conditions as we wake up. 73 degrees right now. this is a live picture dpr from our tower camera here in north raleigh. you'll notice pretty dry conditions here in raleigh. 73, your drive time forecast right now. 73 through about 7 a.m. then we'll start to see temperatures climb slowly today.

through about 8 a.m. most of us should be dry mid-morning. showers and storms quickly return later this afternoon. here is a look at your satellite radar composite. like i said, fairly dry. i want to take you into northern portions of our viewing area right around vance county now where we are seeing the heaviest downpours right along i-85. still seeing wet weather. henderson and vance county. some of those rain fall rates are pretty impress ef. over an inch and a quarter of rain per hour. red shades this morning. you are likely going to see water ponding on the roadways. likely, we are seeing reduced visibility because of that rain in henderson. 1.3 miles there. look at fayetteville. this is because of fog visibility at about three tenths of a mile in fayetteville. i'll walk you through today's forecast and the rest of the workweek in about ten minutes. >> thank you. the emperor of japan says he is concerned about his ability to fulfill his duties, a strong indication that he wishes to

worldwide due to a system outage. we've got north carolina -- cbs north carolina's justin has been hearing from people stuck in line this morning. justin, what a mess out there. >> it really is. and people are walking into this mess not knowing what they're walking into. i've talked with a lot of people this morning who say they arrived here at the airport. they arrived an hour and a half early like they think they are supposed to do. they checked before they arrived and found out from delta that their night was o so they walk in and have no idea, you know, how long this line is and why they're having to wait, but they're getting periodic updates from people here at delta, and the update is always the same, they tell me, that there's just a computer problem. of course, that's what we are hearing from delta nationwide this morning. right now, we are joined from a flier here. this is cathy. you're headed ultimately to idaho by way of minneapolis. so when you walked in this

i know i've done a number of flights where you are running 30 minutes or so. >> exactly. hopefully they can accommodate them on other airlines. that's not unusual that that happens. might cost delta a whole lot of money to do it, but it's one option they'll be looking at for sure. >> now, if you are heading to rdu's web site, it does say for delta, the 7 a.m. flights, in takeoff. never seen that one before. >> that's unusual. >> so it is starting to impact later-morning flights unfortunately. >> okay. updated information on that. . let's get to our forecast. for today, if you are getting ready to walk out the door this morning, this is our view from s hshgaw university. we are looking towards downtown. no fog, no rain in raleigh, but we are experiencing those conditions elsewhere in central north carolina. so we'll start off with our satellite radar composite. right now, the heaviest rain continues to fall in areas north of the triangle. look at portions of vance county. we are seeing yellows and oranges and reds.

a a quarter of rain per hour. it's been falling around oxford and henderson for quite some time now. the heaviest rain, though, still north of henderson. if you are driving around portions of the county, look for water standing on the roadways. we talk about it a lot when we're dealing with rain -- moving very slow. if you see standing water, turn around don't drown. you have no idea how deep that water really is. as far as temperatures are concerned, henderson, you've dropped a degree to 66. durham, you're also 73 at clayton, goldsbor o, and clinton. patchy fog out the door this morning. i will tell you we're seeing the densest fog south so near fayetteville area. 75 at 8 a.m., 82 at lunchtime. pretty cloudy there. 85 our afternoon high. we are dropping back to 82 with scattered showers and storms for that evening drive home. we know when we see rain through the morning drive or the evening drive, it can slow you down. i'm expecting that evening drive today to take a bit longer. we have the stationary front

us those better shower and storm chances. also, that front not going that far. tomorrow, it's still over north carolina. actually slides to our north. still the potential for a few storms. so at 7:30 this morning, we could see a lingering shower or two. most of us seeing drier weather this morning. better shower and storm chances after about lunchtime. keep that umbrella handy for sure. very similar to what we saw yesterday. overnight t majority of this should taper off. we should see a tuesday. showers and storms after about lunchtime again tomorrow. how much rain are we talking about? generally speaking, close to a quarter of an inch. you are seeing that in those shades of green. slow-moving thunderstorm, though, those rain fall rates are going to quickly escalate, and we could be talking about localized flooding concerns. tomorrow we'll add onto those rain fall totals close to a half an inch by the time it's all said and done. highs today in low to mid 80s

into the low 70s. rain tapers off. pretty cloudy skies continue for us. we are back into the upper 80s for tuesday and wednesday. small rain and storm chances and the unsettled weather will continue very limited but continue for us. friday's high right around 90 chl 6:20 right now on your monday morning. let's check in. what's the latest for that morning commute? >> if you are driving, your commute does not look too bad at this time in the morning. on 40, 440, 540, roads are moving well, starting to see some delays, which is just everyone heading into work at the same time. looks good in durham, no delays to report to you there. down through fayetteville, things are moving well, 95, no accidents there cht heading to the airport, that's where we are seeing big problems today. delta grounded all flights worldwide, as we've been telling you, and we are seeing heavy lines, big lines at rdu. so you want to check before you head out there if you have a flight to catch. give yourself some extra time. i-540 and buffalo road.

investigators believe the pilot of the hot air balloon that crashed in texas did not see the power lines ahead of him. a source claims it's believed the pilot was trying to descend through a break in the clouds and didn't see the danger until it was too late. the balloon caught fire and killed 16 people on board. the ntsb has in the released the official cause of that crash. alex rodriguez storied and often controversial career will soon come to an end. the yankees slugger will play with the organization. summing up a-rod's legacy is next to impossible. he'll likely be remembered as one of the best to ever play the game as well as for the steroids scandal that tarnished his reputation forever. rodriguez became emotional while describing his relationship with the game. >> i never thought i can play for 22 years. at 18, i just wanted to make a

low gas prices mean now is the time to take a road trip, if you are willing to spare the vacation time. cbs's hannah daniels join us live to explain. >> good morning, russ. planning to hit the road before the summer o over? now is definitely a good time. according to aaa, gas prices across the country are the lowest they've been in 12 years. the average price far gallon of regular is 2.12. americans are and more vacation time on the table. a survey by the travel industry group project time off found 658 million days wenten used last year. 222 million of these days cannot be rolled over and are gone for good. more than half of american workers had unused vacation time. and the pizza atm will soon be here. xavier university in ohio is about to unveil a new contraption that pops out hot pizzas on demand for hungry students. it's the first machine of its

morning. it said that their flight was on time. they get out here well ahead of their flight only to find out that it's been cancelled or delayed. that's certainly the case for everyone flying delta worldwide this morning. we are told by delta that this is a computer issue, and certainly not affecting the flights already in the air, but all the ones departing rdu and elsewhere around the nation this morning. we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. i'm live north carolina. thank you. continues to track these for us. they may be in the air, but will they take off once they land? that's the other big question. >> big thing you have to do is check before you go out there. the rdu web site now updates. no flight takeoff status for delta flights that start after 7 a.m. so very confusing morning, one that you are going to need to give yourself extra time and pack your patience for if you are heading out to the airport. if you are heading out the door and on to the roads, looking a

practically just collapsed and left buildings buried underneath. the storm dropped up to 18 inches of rain in some areas, causing the kind of flooding that evacuating families just couldn't outrun. federal authorities say the area received a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours. we talked about this at the end of last week, that even if it's a category 1 or just a tropical depression, that amount of rain is incredibly difficult to deal with. >> you can't take that lightly. certainly sad news coming out of there. now, let's change gears. we'll talk about our forecast commute. we also have rain in that evening drive. right now, we are at 73 degrees looking at pretty cloudy skies out at the raleigh durham international airport this morning. the rain we are talking about, some of you could see localized flooding not only this morning but into the afternoon because these showers are moving fairly slowly. i want to stop this and bring you into a closer look. we are seeing isolated showers and storms throughout portions of nash, wilson, and edgecomb counties. i'm saying storms because look closely. you can see one lightning

seeing lightning, as well chl now, we'll take you into vance county where we are seeing the heaviest downpours. if you are seeing those red shades, rain fall rates close to an inch and a quarter of rain per hour. right over middleburg near hender son, very close to 85. now, that's spreading into warrenton as well. take your time if you are commuting around that area. reduced visibility in henderson because of the rain fall rates, reduced visibility southward because of the fog. you can see in below a half mile visibility right around four miles in dunn and smithfield. planning for your day ahead, 75 at 8 a.m., 82 at lufrmg -- lunchtime. maul chance for showers and storms throughout the morning, throughout lunch time and more increased rain chances as we head into the afternoon. a high around 85 degrees. i'll have the rest of your workweek forecast in just a little bit. well, kansas city's sclitterbahn water park will remain closed today while
